Feeling Blu

After a low-key cocktail party at On the Roxx on Thursday, I headed over to a decidedly different atmosphere uptown.

Play, the dance club inside James Funderburk's Hom uptown, hosted the launch party for Blu Magazine, a new publication focusing on fashion, art and street culture in Charlotte. The quarterly magazine is a joint venture for Colombian sister and brother team Camila and Nico Amortegui (below).



The release party drew an eclectic mix of young hipsters in their mid-20s all looking like they just stepped out of a fashion magazine.

This was not your typical Cans crowd and was great people-watching.

Two things about Play: It was my first time back since the club's soft opening in October. They still need to work on the sound system (too muffled) and the dance floor is way too small.

    Looks like a group of wannabes trying to look 'cool' and 'hip'.

    Here's a hint: if you are trying that hard to look cool and hip, you're not. Sorry.

    No offense to our Paid to Party columnist/blogger but this type of junk is laughable. Its a shame the observer passes this off as some form of journalism.

    I guess it is cool to dress like a 40 year old golfer? Or a redneck? Polo shirts? Khaki pants? Boat shoes? Drive a huge jacked up pick up truck? Stand in the mirror and look at yourself before you judge others. I am sure 90% of you could qualify for the show "What Not to Wear".

    Well Betty Jo, all of these people look like they are trying way too hard. Take for example the two guys in the bottom picture. They guy o the right's shirt is too big for the look he is trying to pull off. His hair looks bad, and his make-up looks bad. And for his friend in the hat. Hats in general like that are a huge indicator of trying to hard. They aren't even trying to look like hipsters, they are trying to look like they are in Panic at the Disco
