Hom set to reopen

Two months after closing, Hom is set to reopen next Friday -- with a different theme.

The nightclub will be an upscale urban R&B/hip-hop club -- but building owner Stefan Latorre tells me the new focus is only temporary until he finds a permanent tenant for the multilevel space.

The club was interviewing potential bartenders, waitresses, hostesses and bathroom attendants this week. (If you're interested, they'll be meeting applicants until 8 p.m. today.)

Hom's reopening comes on the heels of several other new clubs geared toward the urban crowd:
  • Decor 1202 had its soft opening last night. The smoke-free restaurant-lounge will serve lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday. Live entertainment Wednesday-Sunday, including comedy acts on Wednesday. (1202 Charlottetowne Center Drive.)
  • Club 935 is the brainchild of promoter Adolph Shiver. The large upscale hip-hop club opened in December and has brought in such celebrities as John Legend and Nelly. Tonight, J. Holiday hosts his CD release party at the club. (935 S. Summit Ave.)
  • Venue 301 hosted several celebrity-filled CIAA parties last month, but I haven't heard a peep about it since then. What do you guys know? (301 E. Ninth St.)
  • Club Ice replaced the former Crush on Stonewall Street.
  • Amnesia replaced the former V Lounge on Fourth Street.

Yep, that place will last a few months and then we'll see the windows covered again. Stefan, your building is cursed!

I am sure that the r&b/hip hop is temporary coming from the owner. He only likes urban money when he is not making any other type. That building has not had any luck up until now and will not have any in the future. Negative karma never prevails.

It will be interesting to see the new place. I only went once before. The restuarant area was really nice and we liked it, but the club was way too dark. I love house music, and it was even too repetetive and blah for me. It looked like some bad stuff was happening in the basement. There were people just laying and passed out on the lounges, and it looked, well... we didnt go back.

can we officially retire the word "upscale" now, since it's been abused so much the word is now meaningless?

Everything about that Hom space has been a complete and total mess - I'm tired of hearing about the misadventures of Stefan. Let's move on.

two words: dress code.

I bet those Avenue residents will long for the days when Hom was there and Andre had his base turned up compared to what things will be like now with the hip-hop crowd. Be careful what you wish for.

Grand Opening...Grand Closing!

When is Mr. Latorre going to stick with what he does. Law. If he is so inclined to spend his money let him donate it to people who really need it. The homeless families in Charlotte, Children with out families, The Humane Society. This project of his will fail the same way all of his other ones have. I feel bad for his neighbors on the block, the New restaurant Basil (Thai) which is opening this week and will attract an upscale clientel and Nix Burgers who is also running a respectable business. Give up Stefan and try something respectable!!!

Hasn't this "story" already been covered once... and it wasn't interesting then.

Sadly even with all these nice venues opening you'll still going to have folks claiming there are not enough places for "urban" folks to go to.

What is it with all these hip hop clubs opening? Looks to be at least 3 or 4 on your list. Do these owners not know what kind of "riff-raff" these clubs attract? Just take a look at the ones that used to be on Independence. They are closed for a reason after all the shootings.

Stefan, everytime i look down that street it looks like a dark ally partly do to the drab iveys having no store front on 5th.Do something to live-in that up and your property will skyrocket.

I can't wait.......everyone's getting tired of the EpiCenter, and who, really, wants to stand around, waiting to get in, waiting for a drink, and waiting in line for the bathroom, at a crowded, Epicenter "nightclub"???
Over it. I want a club where there's great music, and fun people, not the same ol same ol at BMG clubs.
Grand re-opening for the new HOM, can't come fast enough!!!
See everyone there next weekend!

It is very interesting for the associate of Mr. Latorre to say it is the Ivey's drabness that causes 5th Street to look like a dark alley. He has never opened anything that looks lively or classy. Nothing he has ever opened has skyrocketed. How come every business he opens has a seedy look and after being opened for a short time always closes?

OMG...this is a joke. Another Upscale Hip Hop club? Wow. What a shame. Stefan says temporary? I would most definitely agree to that. Temporary until someone gets shot or stabbed. Get back to being an attorney. You don't know what you're doing with nightclubs. I predict we will see another article soon about the demise of the "new" Hom. Bad Karma indeed!

HOM is set to re-open NEXT Friday night, rather than this weekend, due to the promotors not cracking up to be what they were supposed to be.
I think this time, they'll do it right.
They hired two really great managers, Alan, and Larken, who truly seem to know what they're doing.
I'm just happy to have a dance club, with options, rather than the same ol same ol of The Epicenter.
Give it another shot next Friday night.

I think that with the management they have this time, it will be a completely different venue.
None of the previous problems will be an issue, and we should view it as such.
A new beginning, and hopefully, a new hot spot!

Ah... so we have a couple of posts by the new management!

Ancient Chinese proverb: "The fish rots from the head down."

They already burned bridges with some people they need, and are too stupid to even realize it. They are doomed before they start.
