Farewell, Wachovia Plaza

First sign Alive After Five is back: girls in sundresses are spotted walking shoeless around uptown as early as 8 p.m. (Ladies, for a refresher on my dressing do's and don'ts for AA5, click here.)

Wachovia Plaza was filled to the sidewalks last night with a couple thousand young professionals standing shoulder-to-shoulder to celebrate the after-work party's eight-year run on South Tryon.

Next week, it moves permanently to the EpiCentre.

But for one last time, Liquid Pleasure got the plaza party started with a little Montell Jordan (nothing brings back the tortured memories of middle school like "This is How We Do It" or is that just me?), the infectious "Cupid Shuffle" and summer singalong favorite "Brown-Eyed Girl."

Next Thursday inevitably will be packed for the EpiCentre's first Alive After Five. To avoid the long lines for drink tickets, buy them online ahead of time. Tickets are $2 each. Beer is two tickets; wine is two or three; mixed drinks, three to four.

i get the appeal of the epicentre for nightlife in general but it's going to make this beloved event really freaking annoying. the upper deck is not nearly big enough and moving between levels is less than ideal. it's a shame. hopefully they will move it back to the "insert company name here" plaza next year or at least split the event (half the summer at epicentre, the other half at the plaza)

It must be pretty boring if all you do is keep up with party schedules around town. is this reallly a job?

I predict it wont work @ the Epicentre either. I think people will get aggravated and leave and go other places.

Charlotteans love to Party @ AA5, doesn't matter what the location, the uptown yuppies will gather to see and be seen...we used to call it the FUN B Plaza, the the Walkallovaya...next will be the Wellcovia Plaza...the dudes love the chix in sundress' and the chix in sundress love to be seen

anyone else never refer to this event as 'alive after 5' ... we always seem to refer to it as 'live at 5' or l@5 ...

How could there be a better location for this event than EpiCentre?! The rooftop is the best outdoor party venue in the city. And adding the courtyard and the second level to the event this year will give it the feel of a big league outdoor festival. It seems to me that this is the natural evolution of one of the city's best events. I can't wait for next week!

I can't wait for next Thursday!! I think the EpiCentre location is going to be sick. I can't wait to check out that new bar on the roof, Penthouse. Plus Epi is going to have 2 stages!!!!

A guy never gets too old to appreciate sun dresses, regardless of the location.

Last year the EpiCentre location was soooooo much better than the Plaza. They are going to have a stage on the roof and in the courtyard. It's going to rock!!

Alive After 5 is going to be rockin this year. I'm so happy they are merging the two events and doing 2 stages! I'm excited to see how nuts it's going to be!

I think you have a great job. You can write off all your partying and meet lots of fellow partiers.

But, hey, I don't have an office job downtown and I like my sexy sundresses.

epicenter does suck. it's going to be so commercialized, probably going to be hitting everyone up to go bowling and sign up for credit cards like myrtle beach or something. weak.

part of the neat thing about the plaza was that you could just drift in or drift out....too much of a pain to go up the escaltors and deal with the lines, etc...and it will be darker, in the shadow of the boa towers. no more nice evening light coming from the west.
