Sleepless during CIAA

"We're not even going to sleep tonight," said one CIAA partygoer last night as he sipped champagne at Talk of the Town's Heaven @ Blue party.

And he's right: if you want to continue the party from dusk till dawn, it's definitely doable.

I started Thursday's party agenda at Phrozen Hour at Picasso's uptown -- the fourth year the 06 Crew has offered free food and drinks while they last, and they never last long. The party started at 5 and the food was gone by 6:30. And despite the early hour, it was clear things were just getting started as visiting alums fueled up on food (and I spotted more than a couple of people doublefisting drinks).

From there, I party-hopped from the World Tour Party at Chima, hosted by Consuella (who looked gorgeous, but no one was there to see her. The place was empty at 9:30, despite the 8 p.m. start time); to the Heaven @ Blue party where the bar was packed with partygoers in cocktail attire grooving to hip-hop as D.C.'s Let It Flow (a go-go band -- we don't hear enough go-go in Charlotte!) prepared to rock the party; and then over to the EpiCentre for the Suite Dreams party where the dance floor only started to fill up close to midnight.

This is a late-partying crowd and if you're an "early to bed, early to rise" kind of person, you'll never keep up. I ran into several groups who were just leaving their hotels at midnight to go party -- and said parties go as late as 4 a.m. Then there's the breakfast buffets that start in the wee hours. Today, the day parties begin as the battered fish start going into the fryers as early as 11 a.m.

On my agenda today: the Tempo fish fry, Chuck Brown at Amos' Southend, Stogies & Stiletto's at Zink and Anthony Hamilton's album release party (the Charlotte resident is a recent Grammy winner).

My drink of choice: Red Bull and vodka. These CIAA folks put a party girl to shame.

CIAA parties ramp up today

Any veteran to CIAA week knows that the parties don't start in earnest until Thursday and culminate with a full 24 hours of party possibilities on Saturday. But, for local Charlotte CIAA supporters, things were already heating up last night.

I kept my party agenda short last night to rest my body for the craziness that is to come, hitting the CI Edition of PopLife at Apostrophe Lounge and the WarmUP party at Rustic Martini hosted by the Sigmas of Charlotte.

At PopLife, the professional, mostly local crowd was all about networking and discussing the excitement the CIAA Tournament brings to the city. But there was also a change in tone this year with the economy on everyone's mind.

Ebony Hagler, a longtime Charlotte resident and alumna of South Carolina State University ("It's in the MEAC," she sheepishly told me. "We have our tournament next weekend."), has carefully planned her party agenda around her budget. She'll be hitting such low-cost parties tonight as the free Phrozen Hour at Picasso's uptown and the Recession CI Jumpoff at Amos' Southend (just $10).

And what about the buzz around Mary J. Blige's appearance at a Saturday finale party?

"It's $50!" said Hagler, who has cut down on her nightlife the past month to save up for this weekend. "I need my drinking money."

And while Mary J. is sure to draw a big crowd, other promoters may find that their steep ticket prices don't fly this year.

Over at the Sigmas party, the dance floor was just filling up at 11 p.m. as the DJ played all the favorites: "Single Ladies," "Put Your Hands Up," and "The Choice is Yours." Sigmas reunited with fellow alums and posed for photos.

On tonight's agenda: Phrozen Hour, Fire & Ice, Pink Groove, Heaven @ Blue and the World Tour Party.

Where will you guys be partying?

Checking out the Checkers

An attendance record was set at Time Warner Cable Arena on Saturday night -- but it wasn't for the struggling Bobcats. Rather, it was the Checkers, perhaps Charlotte's best-kept secret, who had an all-time audience high of 12,398 for their 5-2 victory over the Florida Everblades.

Maybe the secret's getting out.

I checked out the Checkers for (admittedly) the first time on Saturday and was surprised to see the game as well attended than a Bobcats game (average attendance 14,065; they had a season-high of 19,244 during Friday's game against Orlando).

But what struck me the most was the entire atmosphere of fun the Checkers organization created in the arena. Whereas people attend Bobcats games dressed to the nines and looking to see and be seen on their way to courtside seats or to the BackCourt Bar for free cookies, those in attendance at the Checkers game Saturday were there just for a good time, from little kids to young professionals in their 20s, 30s and 40s -- and I even saw a couple of senior citizens doing the chicken dance on the jumbo screen.

Sure, the hockey isn't as pretty as a Hurricanes game -- I saw more than one player whiff -- but tickets are cheap and the entertainment borders on the goofy: human hamster races, the above-mentioned chicken dance, giant eyeball races, an SNL clip of Christopher Walken ("I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell") and an ATV-driving polar bear who does donuts on the ice.

Add in the multiple bars in the arena and it's quite the social scene. There was even a dating service playing matchmaker up at the Rock the Rooftop bar on the upper level.

The Checkers are back at home March 1. Tickets range from $10-$35. Look out for the semi-regular Wet Your Whistle Weekday promotions -- next one is March 10 -- where 12-ounce Bud Lights at the arena are only $3 (regularly $6.25).

Newest bar crawl theme: the Snuggie?

From a cheesy infomercial to pop culture parody, the Snuggie -- that cozy fleece blanket with sleeves -- has quickly become a must-have home accessory.

Ellen DeGeneres wore one on her show, Matt Lauer's co-anchors coaxed him to try one on, Jay Leno uses them for an easy joke and they have become a popular topic on Facebook, spawning status updates devoted to their coziness and even a fan page that's 13,900 strong.

And now, they've even snuggied their way into the nightlife scene.

The Snuggie Pub Crawl is now coming to a city near you. The idea for the crawl was started by a pair of Chicago twentysomethings who recognized the cult-like following the Snuggie has attracted. A dozen other cities of future Snuggie Pub Crawls are now listed on the site. (Want to add Charlotte to the list? Send them an e-mail.) The events are strictly BYO-Snuggie.

I ordered one of my own (purely for research purposes, of course). In fact, I'm wearing it as I blog.

Now it's your turn, readers. E-mail me photos of you (or your friends) in Snuggies, whether you're walking the dog, reading on the couch or having a drink at the bar. I'll compile the best photos and post them on CharlotteObserver.com.

Texting while partying -- make it stop

If you ever stand in the middle of a bar and just take a look around, it's amazing to see how many people have their noses buried in their iPhones, Blackberries, Sidekicks -- you name it -- with a look of concentration on their faces as their friends stare blankly at the nearest TV.

If you're out at a bar, you're there to socialize with your friends, dance, shoot some pool and have a good time -- why text? You're with the people you want to be with, right? But by staring at your little screen instead of talking to your friends, think about the message that's sending:
  1. They're not interesting enough.
  2. You'd rather be somewhere else.
  3. You don't have the basic social skills to carry a conversation.
Or, consider the girl who's out with her friends for the always popular Girls Night Out. Problem is, girlfriend spends most of the night in the corner texting her boyfriend at home. Why bother coming out at all?

Texting should be reserved for coordinating logistics -- "Meet me by the DJ booth," "Running late," or if your boyfriend really needs to know, "I'm leaving in 20." Or for emergency situations (e.g. in an attempt to shoo off unwanted approaches, you whip out your phone and pretend to start texting).

But, as a friend of mine says, "Texting should be considered the same as secondhand smoke in that we are all unwilling victims."

Bartender's Ball serves up cold drinks, hot girls

Much of Charlotte's young professionals are using today's holiday to recover from one of the biggest parties of the year -- Bartender's Ball 2009.

The annual party, now in its eighth year, was held at The Blake Hotel last night, and despite the economy and steep ticket price, turnout was as high (if not higher) than in past years. Organizer Rich Saner of Rock House Events told me around 8 p.m. that 1,500 wristbands had already been used and organizers were searching for more as partygoers continued to stream in. (A nice touch at the door: Girls handing out bottles of beer as people made their way upstairs to the ballroom.)

This year's party packed some international flavor into the Blake ballroom -- more than 40 area bars decorated their individual booths to look like countries from around the world. My favorites: BlackFinn Saloon's Vietnam booth with camo netting and bartenders dressed as the characters from "Tropic Thunder," and On The Roxx's mini Red Light District with gaudy chandeliers fit for an Amsterdam bordello.

The most creative use of beer cases goes to Brick & Barrel who built a pyramid to go with its Egyptian theme. (Added bonus: shots came straight from King Tut's mouth.)

But this year's best booths had more to do with the creative costuming -- and who could bare more. For Forum's Grecian booth, a scantily clad goddess gyrated alongside a Spartan warrior. Hooters girls bartended dressed as snow bunnies in their Arctic booth. The Stool Pigeons bartenders looked perfectly Parisian. And Alley Cat's bartenders get the award for best makeup -- they were dressed as Harajuku girls for the bar's Japanese-themed booth.

Update -- The official "Best Booths" for the night:

  • First place: Tie between BlackFinn (Vietnam) and On the Roxx (Amsterdam).
  • Second place: Tie between Brick & Barrel (Egypt) and Cans, who turned their booth into a British pub.
  • Third place: 1900 Mexican Grille who made their booth into a mini fiesta.

But the overall theme of the night was the free-flowing, top shelf liquor -- it is called the Bartender's Ball after all. Tight security helped keep the crowd in check despite the copious amounts of alcohol consumed, and as far as I could tell, it was a happy, not rowdy, diverse crowd (average age range: 27-35).

It's a shame that it has to end so early every year. When the music shut off at midnight and the lights came on, people started chanting "One more song!"

We were ready to continue the party into the night.

I'll be posting more pics later in the week, but in the meantime click here for more.

Bourbon Street on Tryon Street

Mardi Gras was a decidedly more classy affair as Fat Tuesday fell on a Thursday this year.

The eighth annual Beads for Needs party was held last night at the Wachovia Atrium, raising funds for Pat's Place Child Advocacy Center, an organization dedicated to the needs of sexually abused children.

Despite the New Orleans theme of the party, no one treated the Wachovia building like Bourbon Street. In fact, the craziest things got was when the band, Liquid Pleasure, started playing the Electric Slide and there was a bum rush to the dance floor.

Instead, the crowd (seemingly more sparse -- and tamer, from what I hear -- than in past years) was content to sample the food (including pulled pork from Mert's, organic eats from Blynk, lobster ravioli from City Tavern, pizza from Libretto's, wraps from BB&M) and mingle with fellow young professionals.

Also a big hit: the (free!) photo booth and a green screen photo area where you could have your photo printed on the Mardi Gras-themed background of your choice.

If you went to the Red Hot Turkey Bash in November, the setup was eerily similar -- minus the giant Christmas tree. It's a format that works though -- open bar, free food and a Motown-style band to get those hips moving.

Win tickets!

The 8th Annual Bartender's Ball is Sunday and includes more than 40 area bars serving top shelf liquor, five DJs and complimentary buffet.

It draws nearly 2,000 young professionals every year and is one of the biggest social events in Charlotte.

This year's party benefits the Guys with Ties.

Don't feel like shelling out the dough for tickets this year? Test your fast-finger luck for a pair of free tickets here.

First person to e-mail me gets them.

Update: Tickets gone.

And for the slow-pokes, tickets are still available for $70 online or $60 at one of the participating bars. No tickets will be sold at the door. (For another chance to win tickets, pick up a copy of CLT in Friday's Observer.)

On swimsuit issue's cover: the girl next door

The focus may have been on Bar Refaeli last night when David Letterman revealed her as the 2009 covergirl for Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue, but one of Charlotte's own shares it with her.

Matthews native (and Andy Roddick's fiancee) Brooklyn Decker, 21, appears next to Refaeli's image in a smaller photo touting the magazine's bodypainting photos inside.

It is Decker's fourth time appearing in the swimsuit issue.

In an interview last week, Decker said she considers the swimsuit issue her most important job and landing the cover "would be a dream come true."

Decker, 21, graduated from Butler High School in 2005. Her parents and younger brother still live in Matthews.

You can read my full interview with Decker next week on CharlotteObserver.com or in the Observer's Style section.

The 2009 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is on newsstands now.

Update on Press Box

The new owners of The Press Box tell me they plan to gut the building and turn it into a sleek gastro pub with a rustic feel.

“We're adding hardwood floors, all new booths, updated flatscreens and an antique bar,” Tom Wicker said this week.

Wicker and his stepson Britton McCorkle are no strangers to Charlotte's nightlife scene. Wicker has had a hand in more than 35 venues around Charlotte, including the French Quarter and Yellow Rose Tavern, while McCorkle used to own Vinnie's Raw Bar.

Wicker and McCorkle bought The Press Box – which they're planning to rename Brazwell's – because of its location on Montford Drive, which turns into a bustling entertainment district on the weekends.

And longtime fans of the bar can rest assured that the new owners will be keeping its famous patio.

Wicker says he plans to open Brazwell's doors in six to eight weeks.

The Press Box closed?

Montford Drive's Press Box quietly closed its doors about two weeks ago, confounding fans of the bar with little explanation -- but word is that it is under new ownership and will reopen its doors within the next two months after undergoing renovations.

It's not clear whether the new owners will keep the Press Box name.

The historic sports dive -- it was one of the first bars in Charlotte to serve liquor by the drink -- first changed ownership a little more than a year ago.

Its warm-weather deck is a popular hangout in the summer months and it has a loyal following of longtime regulars.
