On swimsuit issue's cover: the girl next door

The focus may have been on Bar Refaeli last night when David Letterman revealed her as the 2009 covergirl for Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue, but one of Charlotte's own shares it with her.

Matthews native (and Andy Roddick's fiancee) Brooklyn Decker, 21, appears next to Refaeli's image in a smaller photo touting the magazine's bodypainting photos inside.

It is Decker's fourth time appearing in the swimsuit issue.

In an interview last week, Decker said she considers the swimsuit issue her most important job and landing the cover "would be a dream come true."

Decker, 21, graduated from Butler High School in 2005. Her parents and younger brother still live in Matthews.

You can read my full interview with Decker next week on CharlotteObserver.com or in the Observer's Style section.

The 2009 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is on newsstands now.

"She will be in rehab before she is 25!"

Ya'll are just too harsh.

Brooklyn is and always has been a really good person.

Without make up you'd pass her on the street and not even do a double take.

But the camera loves her. Being an SI swimsuit model takes more work than you might think.

Wow - she is obviously an incredible athlete, (for the dense, that was meant sarcastically). What message does this send to female athletes? If women want to display their bodies in sexually suggestive poses, that is fine in a different magazine. However, Sports Illustrated should not be about sexualizing women. I find this appalling and demeaning to women athletes. These models do not live healthy lifestyles, they can't live healthy and be that thin. they can't be that thin and have natural breasts. Again, fine for a magazine that is about sex, but it should not be here.

Brooklyn Decker isn't the only pretty girl to come from Matthews. When I was in Atlanta a few years ago, I saw one of the most beautiful girls in a magazine. I met her, and she was nice person also. She lived in the subdivision on the right going out of Matthews toward Pineville. She married the guy who owned the bar where she was bartending on Windy Hill Road in Atlanta. And she now has a child. Let us just hope that it is a girl who takes after her mother. I met another pretty girl in Tampa a few years ago who is also from Matthews.

partyprincess - close to 75% of the readers of SI are men. SI have been doing the swimsuit issue as a special for quite some time now. Who cares if the models are all atheletes? Sex sells, deal with it...

Actually, I am a size four, but of course someone as crass and stupid as you couldn't imagine that everything in life should not boil down to sex, Eliza.

Wow, I hope you are over the age of 14, but from the idiocy showing through in your reply, I would doubt it. You are the type of person who perpetuates what is wrong with the female sex- So exceedingly shallow.

Women are more than just toys for male amusement.

Again, I do not have a problem with women displaying their bodies in magazines about sex and fashion. Although I do wish it promoted healthy bodies and self respect.

You cannot convince me that this type of spread belongs in SI.

Of course with the obvious num-nut brains of the people who responded to this, they probably couldn't convince me of anything. Get a Clue and grow up.

You guys are idiots. Brooke is GORGEOUS in person and has the one of the sweetest and most intriguing personality, her humor is hilarious. I went to highschool with her, she deserves every amount of fame it brings her. Stop bashing her, she's an average chick pure and simple... She was a UNC student, the girl is brilliant and beautiful.

Yeah, I can't believe SI held the gun to these girls' heads to force them into posing in a swimsuit.

Partyprincess (who doesn't sound like she'd be much fun at a party) says..."These models do not live healthy lifestyles, they can't live healthy and be that thin. They can't be that thin and have natural breasts."

Wrong on all three counts! None of these girls are skinny little twigs. They're all quite healthy; they just don't happen to be carrying any unnecessary extra poundage. And thin girls with big natural breasts are a rarity, but they do exist - every one of those models is a "perfect" example (SI doesn't "do" implants in the swimsuit issue; never has). Those who are so fortunate have a unique physical advantage that they can leverage to get absolutely anything they want in life if they play their cards right. Don't be bitter just because you didn't hit a similar genetic home run, princess. It's not becoming.

I'm surprised there is so much negative feedback in the comments.

Good for her that she made it to that level.

You don't have clue what I look like. However, I can draw some pretty good conclusions about your IQ based on your response.

Again, fine to display bodies in magazines that are supposed to be about sex or fashion -another area I am pretty sure you are clueless about. However, modeling a bikini in a suggestive manner, is NOT a sport.
Don't worry - I am sure you will hit puberty eventually and see it from a REAL perspective as opposed to your pathetic fantasy. Who knows - maybe you'll even eventually touch a real woman. (Let me know - I'll send her a sympathy card)
