Luna Lounge set to open

Just got the details on Luna's grand opening next week. The sleek ultra lounge (from the same people who brought you Sunset Club and Kiss Lounge) is on North College Street, in the space once occupied by the ill-fated Coyote Ugly.

According to a Facebook invite:

"LUNA will unveil itself as Charlotte's premier party destination for those who enjoy their drinking, socializing and dancing all in one place. ... Featuring upscale service and buzzworthy events hosted by Rumba Productions, Mingleberry, KPG, Red Door (just to name a few), this venue strikes to the heart of the super spoiled socialite in all of us. But does this place really live up to the hype? Slap on your best runway model attire next week and decide for yourself."

The grand opening festivities run Aug. 21-22, from 8-10 p.m. Complimentary appetizers and cocktails (RSVP to krystie@lunacharlotte.com). Opens to the general public at 10 p.m.

I'm going with 2 months.

I'm going with 4 1/2 to 5 months. They at least have rent saved for that long.

Let's see...bad owner, bad location and bad idea...I'll have to take the over on this just because it will be new and people will check it out. Look at his other places like Sunset Club and Kiss Lounge...somehow they are still open. Nothing like hanging out the Sunset Clubs bartenders around 12 AM...after they closed because no one was in the place.

Not a good sign when their listed website (http://www.lunacharlotte.com/) doesn't work.

Has anything moved into the old Time Lounge - Comedy Zone building?

Over/Under is January 2nd 2010

Hummmm, I'll give it 7 months. All the Ed Hardy wearing knobs will make it over there. It'll look like a rack from Marshall's in no time!

Reminds me of a favorite Seinfeld monologue--

There's always that one location, one store location that's constantly changing hands. Everybody has this in their neighborhood, it's a leather store, it's a yogurt shop, it's a pet supply. It's constantly changing and nobody can do business there. It's like some sort of Bermuda triangle of retail, you know? Stores open up and then they just disappear without a trace. Nobody knows what happened to 'em. I guess eventually when like aliens land in mother ship of close encounters, bottom will slowly open and all these store owners will come wondering out in a daze going 'I thought there would be more walk-in traffic didn't you?...

Yet another "upscale" club. I long for the old Thursday nights at ABI where $1.50 would get you anything on tap.

I give it six months max.

Sadly, I'm much too old to go out. But I was once on every dance floor 'til dawn and so I am curious to know-would someone tell me?-why the big giant diss of this place before it opens? I agree it seems a little too far north on College-what else?

"...a party destination for those who enjoy their drinking, socializing and dancing all in one place."

Thank goodness Charlotte is finally getting one of those. I hate having to buy my drink at one bar, walk next door to talk to someone, and head to yet a third place to dance. Whew.. it's exhausting.

"...this venue strikes to the heart of the super spoiled socialite in all of us."

It's going to be ANOTHER bar with velvet ropes and meat heads wearing black T-shirts and earpieces, handpicking from the anticipated horde, the wannabe glitterati to have the honor of drinking an overpriced, watered-down martini inside an empty bar, with hip-hop music blaring so loudly you can't speak to your neighbor.

To Anonymous @ 5:22...The reason for all the nay-saying is that this cursed location is just going to be another location for douchebags and generic Charlotte sluts with "realtor hair" to ruin before it can become a success. I give it 6 months.

Anonymous said...

Another reason for the nay-saying is that uptown is becoming over saturated with clubs and its quite pathetic.

it will close by january 2nd , no doubt!!

This has got to be the only city where people actually want places to fail... Charlotte seems to be a magnet for negative nancies!

Anonymous said...

Maybe the Sunset Club is empty because there are a lot of ugly people in Charlotte. I mean, the most crowded bar is always Bar Charlotte, and that place and it's clientele are gross!!

To Anonymous @ 7:07...it's not that we're negative, we've just seen this scenario play out countless times in recent years. Club owners here seem to revel in "reinventing" the same tired lounge-esque bars that have been around since Tonic in the late 90s. Snore.....

So first, people complain that there's nothing to do uptown. Now lots of places continue to open and people complain that it's becoming "over-saturated". Is anybody ever satisfied in this city?

what's realtor hair? That's anew one on me, but I look forward to using that descriptor in the near future.

It is my understanding that Luna will be catering to an international audience, which in Charlotte, means Columbian/South American. Therefore, I think it will be fine.

Does the "Paid to Party" girl actually go to these places? I appreciate the notices of new bars / clubs, however, I think it would also be helpful to get an objective write up / review of the place once it's in business.

Awww...ABI! I used to love that place! Great nice, but laid back atmosphere, good drinks and awesome couches on the basement level (that weren't "VIP" and you didn't have to pay to sit on them.)
I love Charlotte but it isn't Miami or NYC. Quit opening all these pretentious places that go out of business once the beautiful people find a newer and shinier venue! Long live Thomas Street Tavern ping pong!

If you give it some time to grow on you maybe you will enjoy the club. I am from L.A. and not "Lovely Atlanta", to have a great club it has to have a great theme! I have not seen that at any club or bar here in Charlotte.

I had high hopes for Luna, since I work nearby, but I'm not a lounge type. I need a place with a long worldly beer selection so I can try something different each time. So far, the Common Market is the best I have found for that, but I just don't have enough (any) tats and piercings to feel relaxed there.

Any recommendations, near uptown, for a place with older clientele and a huge beer selection?

Anon 8:27: Realtor hair is the same as tv anchor hair, except that it contains more hairspray to keep those stray hairs in check whilst getting in and out of their Lexus into the humid Charlotte air showing McMansions all day.

I do hope the club makes it and I will check out the grand opening. It is a bit too far away from the other clubs, though. I think that's why that location is cursed.

dude this sounds so gay. 4 months. everybody get your best ed hardy gear.

Why does every club in Charlotte have to be for the "super spoiled socialite" and upscale crowd. What happened to the dance clubs where you didn't have to dress up, could get a good beer, and dance all night without having to deal with wannabe pretentious people?

Wow you all said the same thing about KISS Lounge and we just had our one year anniversary party last week. It's a shame how closed minded people can be here in the Charlotte area. Everyone complains about not having anything to do or places to go yet when new places open up, before they go out to experience the venues themselves, it has to be looked upon as a negative thing. I will also put my name here. I have nothing to be anonymous about. LUNA Lounge after all is our third venture. Looks like we are doing something right.

Sometimes people want to look extra nice and go out. What is wrong with that? I used to be the first one in the club in whatever, but now I LIKE getting all dolled up. I also have nights where I just want to put on some jeans and sit in a booth with a beer.

Different people have different preferences and looking down your nose at people that like these places makes you just as pretentious as you think they are.

LUNA Opening was GREAT!!!! ... The BEST spot in Charlotte…. TECH-HOUSE music.... Spectacular decorations... GREAT crow...
You should not talk about a place before you see it... I went Friday and Saturday ... Just have to say:
CHARLOTTE never seeing a Lounge likes this...

I cannot believe how negative people are these days.
