Latorre's closing, nightclub moving

After 10 years on Fifth Street, Latorre's Restaurant is closing.

Its last day of business will be Saturday, according to an e-mail this morning announcing the closing. The nightclub portion of Latorre's that regularly draws salsa lovers will move to the top floor of the old Hom complex next door.

The nightclub -- opening Aug. 21 -- joins Fiji Sushi Bar & Lounge and Kashmere to round out the multilevel space that closed in April.

No word on what will replace the restaurant.

Amazed it stayed open this long. Aquavina shouldn't be too far behind now. How many sushi places do we really need?

That's awesome! The food was never anything special at Latorre's. I am suprised the nightclub is sticking around.

When it comes to sushi and Asian food near Uptown, I don't feel a need to stray from the places that have been around for a while: Cuisine Malaya, Nikko's and Fuse Box. I know Nikko's got really expensive when they moved into the pink building, but it's still good stuff. I just don't know if any of the new places can be as good or have staying power.

But hey, I guess between Brazilian rodizios and Sushi places, Uptown is pretty much saturated now. Now if only someone would open a tavern that featured a wide selection of American craft beers and Belgian abbey ales (ala Flying Saucer)!

Late night retro diner.

Indian restaurant.

Perfect spot for a Belgian beer joint.
Hell, why not a mini microbrewery to boot ?

How about a mexican restaurant? I don't think there is one Uptown!

By the way, unlike all the usual Charlotte whiners, this is good news. It means the space isn't sitting empty (and it's actually one of the few older buildings left) and it means JOBS.

Blues Club.

Something swanky, charge a decent cover to keep the rif-raff out and don't offer Bud-light or MGD.

Premium cocktails and premium live music. One night a week offer stand up comedy.

Perfect for that space.

A real Dean and Deluca. Like the one in SoHo not the crap in CharLanta. And how about being opened on the weekends as well, now there's a concept.

i feel badly for anonymous who posted at 3:30. you must be new to this town. quality will never happen here. uptown business is geared to frat boys and their dates. if you're looking for sophistication...better move back to nyc (if you can). this town will always be a dive.

Trust me, I know. My place is up for sale and if I luck out and actually sell it I am the HELL OUTTA THIS DUMP.

So uninspiring.

What about an 100% upscale organic restaurant ?

A great vegetarian restaurant like Laughing Seed in Asheville.

This guy does not know how to do business in this industry. I had a party that spent over 15K at Aquavina, although everything was great, they gave me no discount what so ever. Result, no repeat business.
Daddys would of made it, all he had to do was charge dollar beers like Vinnies to get a crowd in there.

To the person that thinks Charlotte is a dump, why did you bother moving here if it's so "terrible"?? I'll be the first to admit it's not the greatest place ever but there are a lot of worse places to be...

Pretty safe to assume 3:46 and 3:58 are the yank yuppie types who think the only places worth their precious time are New York, Chicago, LA, and SF. They will complain about every other place and how it's not cool enough for them, but somehow they end up in Charlotte. Hey - you interviewed with [insert bank/law firm/real estate firm] and accepted the job! Deal with it.

Also, to the guy who said uptown only caters to frat boys: what kind of bizzaro Charlotte are you living in? Maybe it's because I went to a southern school, but I've never seen frat boys with a tube of gel in their hair wearing tacky v-neck Ed Hardy shirts and skin-tight jeans.

Yes, a Flying Saucer would be awesome, but it's too laid back and chill for uptown unfortunately.

Uhhh douche,

It was the same "Yank" that thinks flying saucer would be a great fit. The same "Yank" that's lived here for 20 years and is tired of waiting for the town to become something. The same "Yank" that has lived uptown for 8 years and knows that uptown is full of frat boy hangouts. The same "Yank" that is quite sure you are one of these loser frat boys.

By the way this is a blog and the little button you click says "post a comment". That means I can speak my peace so shove it up your a$$ if you don't like it buddy.

No need to cuss, "buddy." I didn't say you couldn't speak your mind... I'm also speaking mine. Charlotte (specificallly uptown) will never be anything until there is more socioeconomic diversity - that is, fewer yuppies that only want to go to places like Kashmir or Luna Lounge.

As a matter of fact, I'm not a loser frat boy, but I'd much rather hang with them than the Ed Hardy crowd. Frat boys hang out on Montford. Where are the uptown frat hangouts? The 500 sq ft Corner Pub? Suite, Mez, Luna, etc don't seem to fit the bill. Maybe Town Tavern- no wait that's gotta be a Buffalo Bar.

Charlotte needs a bar like Rudy's! Jukebox + beer + free hot dogs all the time + cool people (not frat boy or ed hardy dbags that are everywhere here)! PLEASE, somebody open something like Rudy's!

First, I'd like to say I don't like Ed Hardy or frat dudes, but if you southern frat dudes are going to make fun of the Ed Hardy dudes wearing "tight jeans" (by the way, you're suppose to wear jeans that fit, not ones that are baggy and 2 sizes too big), frat dudes wear khaki shorts that are way too short, pink shirts, boat shoes, and bama bangs (and you know you stood in the mirror for about 30 minutes blow drying it to stay that way... it's just not natural) so I don't see how you can judge someone with hair gel and ed hardy...

Fo' sure on the frat boy slams !!!

Total fools ! Or is it Tools ?

They look like a bunch of Gilligan's.

Surprised the restaurant is closing, but not surprised the club is moving next door since Latorre does own the building. However, since Latorre will be running the club, I give it 6 months before it closes, too.

Karma IS a b*tch!!!

OMG so true on how guys dress here in the South. All I can say is everytime I see one of them it reminds me of Summers Eve because they look like a DEUCHE!!! Seriously why are you wearing shorts that are WAY above your knee? Get some style and quit borrowing it from the Country club. How about wearing a button down and NOT tucking it in? Stop pretending to be Donald Trump with your horrible combovers. It looks so silly. Thats just my opinion.
