Free concerts and no covers

I'm heading out of town for the July 4th holiday this weekend, so things will be pretty quiet -- but before I go, I wanted to bring a couple of noteworthy free concerts to your attention.

Next Thursday's Alive After Five features Who's Bad, a Michael Jackson tribute band. Sparkly gloves not required for entry, but highly recommended.

Also at the EpiCentre: Vanilla Ice (yes, really) performs July 11 as part of the complex's summer concert series. Sing it with me: "Doo doo doo d-d-doo doo ..."

And speaking of free, a reader asked me to compile a list of all the uptown bars that don't charge a cover on the weekends. Here's what I found (let me know if I missed any):
  • Brick & Barrel
  • Cans
  • Fox & Hound
  • Therapy
  • PJ's
  • Cosmos
  • Wild Wing Cafe
  • Stool Pigeons
  • Corner Pub
  • The Pub at Gateway
  • Cedar Street Tavern
  • Picasso's
  • Dixie's Tavern

Yeah I would agree that's stupid - if by stupid you mean making a hell of a lot of money, then yeah that's stupid. They charge a cover because people will pay it. Look at Suite on the weekends. It's supply & demand.

Selwyn. leave your ed hardy at HOME. Please.

Suite, where real men go to meet men!!

I prefer the absurdity of Epicentre "Where it's $10 to park, and then we'll charge you cover, too!"

As a bar owner and manager myself, I love to see people bitching about covers...Do you know why they have covers downtown? Cause the stupid lawmakers in this state don't require anyone to purchase anything if they are an "open" establishment....long story short...bums (which Charlotte has ALOT of) have the legal right to come into any one of those places and not buy a drink or food or anything, and we cannot kick them out. I tried dress codes, but then the "white" people get scared that it's a "urban" club and won't come...so we charge 5$ to get it, cause the bums don't have it.

hint... if you're paying a cover, they are trying to keep you and your type out.

Brazwell's is eating every bars' lunch right now. No cover either.

The only thing good to do at downtown bars is to meet people from Gastonia.

I asked Cosmos about it a week ago and they're too busy to return my e-mail, apparently.

Anyone else know about Cosmos on Saturdays?

Is it new that B&B doesn't charge a cover? I've always had to pay a $5 cover on the weekend (I'm a guy).

I have always paid at least $5 for a cover at Brick and Barrell...it does suck, i would spend more $ inside but that kind of gets under my skin they charge. Any place that has a dance floor seems to charge.

Of course Brazwell's doesn't have a cover, it's in the suburbs. Clearly you work there.

What time do these free shows start and end at Epicentre?

BlackFinn, Suite, Whisky River, StrikeCity and Penthouse don't charge covers as long as you have a wristband from AAF or the Summer Concert Series. The wristbands are free

I've never seen any bums in Cosmos. And they don't charge cover. So yes its possible to not charge cover and still have a great establishment. You won't be as rich doing it, so I guess just keep charging me.
